Chapter 01: Crows’ flocking

Because no matter where, they flock…

“Do you have everything you need? Essences? Wand? Clothes?”, every time Kiyoko asked me something I felt even more nervous, she has been my Mentor for eleven years now but still I felt a bit uneasy when she told me I should visit an academy to enhance my magic.

I never saw a need for it to be honest, but since I started bonding with Hinata and Kageyama I constantly had the desire to know more behind this power, the power of magic creatures and handling magic in general.

“What to do when someone from the iron wall clan talks to you?”, she asked me with a frown.

I shook my head and put on a barrier.

She nodded in satisfaction.

“What if the white eagles follow you again like last time?”

While placing my hand on my neck a sudden rush of heat and white light engulfed me as Kiyoko nodded again.

“Amazing, your illusions are way better now”, she patted my head accidentally waking Kageyama and Hinata below it.

“I want to see the academy and stand on the field!”, Hinata cooed.

“Bogee! Bogee! You are way too weak to stand against anyone, even a branch!”, Kageyama started to pluck on his head.

With a heavy sigh I moved my index-finger to chain Kageyama’s claw and Hinata’s as well.

“You can’t make any ruckus, all kinds of clans and tribes will attend the academy so be careful.

We already discussed that, right?”, both nodded disappointed that I had opened my lumpy bag.

“Now jump in”, I smiled and Hinata was the first one to go before Kageyama followed.

They sure grew heavy unlike the day I got them and even their voices are crystal clear.

Kiyoko said that through my bonding and training with them I had amplified their magical power as well leading them to talk on their own now and even develop abilities.

Hinata is very good in jumping around and flying heights I never saw any crow fly before.

Kageyama was a hunter like I had never seen before tactic and precision was very easy for him to develop.

Both of them peeked out of the bag as I was slowly striding the long path towards the entrance, all kinds of wizards and witches entering, but what was even more interesting the creatures that were following them.

I couldn’t trust my eyes as I stood in front of the big castle that was as broad as a small village, the fence separating it like an own world.

As I set foot beyond the entrance as sudden gust made me close my eyes, the strong feeling of dizziness engulfing me.

The next moment I realized my legs gave in and I passed out.

“Y-Yachi!”, Hinata’s stutter yell had clearly ripped me out of my dreams like every morning, until I realized it was not morning and we were somewhere unfamiliar.

“Hinata where are we?!”, a stutter yell escaped out of me as well, maybe something I had taken from Hinata.

The little crow with his orange feathers on his hand came closer as his beak touched my nose, in a low voice he muttered.

“The pharmacy of the academy! I think you didn’t realize there was an illusion spell you had to dissolve before you entered, so it must have affected your consciousness.”

I stared at the crow with a slight frown.

Wait a second, Hinata of all creatures would be the last one to know that.

With a quick movement I grabbed the crow between my two hands and stared down at him.

“Who told you that?”

“Shh, shh”, he just could bring out as I looked at his beak moving to the other side.

Three young men and three crows sitting on the other side of the room.

My face heated up and I stared back at Hinata.

“W-Why didn’t you t-tell me?”, I whispered and he escaped my hand prison to hide on my shoulder.

“The grey-haired one is the one who helped you get here! What should I do? Fight him?”, he whispered back.

“No, now that I think of it I never saw you not picking a fight for the first time. You did well”, I stroked his orange feather with my index-finger and smiled awkwardly at the grey-haired man.

As I wanted to get up he immediately rushed over and made me sit down again, still trying to not come too close to me.

“No need to rush things, you might still feel dizzy if you get up too quickly. I used some healing spells on you to ease the nausea and dizziness, but I can’t really do much when it comes to the after effect of the illusion on foreign bodies”, an uneasy smile plastered on his face as he scratched his hair that looked more silver the closer he got.

“Thank you very much for helping me, my crow told you were the one who helped me. I don’t know how to show my gratitude. I am good with herbs and memorizing books so if I can repay you with any kind of know–”, he cut me of facing his palms towards me and shaking his hands, obviously denying my help immediately.

“No need, I really don’t mind. I only wanted to help you and since your crows were noisy I realized you were unconscious in the first place. You should be grateful towards them”, he looked back to the tallest and oldest looking one of the other men.

“Asahi, how long will it take until someone from Johsai will treat her properly?”, he asked the brunette with long hair, a slight beard on his chin that he started to scratch in thought after he was shocked that the man had asked him in the first place.

“I think they are doing a lot of preparations, but one of the seniors will come later… that’s what Nishinoya told me”, he pointed at one of the crows with a blonde feather who seemed even smaller than Hinata.

Wait, Crows?!

Now that I am fully aware of my surroundings and situations I realized they had crows too.

My awe seemed clearly visible on my face as the scary-looking man called Asahi asked me what was wrong.

“I never saw any other crows beside my two”, I just muttered and suddenly I realized someone was missing.

I stared at the other man who was tall, lean and had black hair as he scowled the whole time, fixing me with crossed arms.

“It means those crows are yours?”, I had pointed at the other two who seemed to differ in colour than Kageyama.

“Yes, they are both called Ennoshita and Tanaka”, he pointed at them one of them looking… less feathery.

“Come on introduce yourselves. Ah wait, I did not introduce myself either. My name is Sugawara Koushi, I am a senior at this academy and a wizard who specializes in strategy-based magic, mostly wind-related”, a wide smile that showered one with warmth radiated from his face.

“I-I told him not to do that”, Hinata muttered again as he was a bit uneasy.

What did he mean?

Hinata stared at me.

“Kageyama…”, he told me as if he read my mind and I frowned, but Sugawara fast quicker than me as he picked both crows.

“Don’t be shy”, he threw them into the air as the air was filled with black crow feathers that made me hide my face until they fell to the ground.

Another pair of men where standing in front of me, a bald one and the other had dark brown hair.

“Damn it’s a cute one”, it came out of the bald one, who didn’t seem to mind to come even closer.

“Tanaka cut it out!”, Sugawara had slapped his back and he stood straight again.

“Tanaka Ryuunosuke, from the Crow tribe. I am blessed to meet a cute witch like you”, he stiffened as his flushed face stared intensely at me.

“Ennoshita Chikara, nice to make your acquaintance. Tanaka you look stupid”, he added as he his stare wandered to Tanaka again.

“Yachi Hitoka, I studied under my mentor Kiyoko Shimizu. My goal is to specialize in any kind of magic and gain a lot of practical experience since my magic is rather by the book if you can call it like that”, my gaze wandered over to the still scowling man.

“Kiyoko?! That Kiyoko?!”, especially Tanaka seemed overly excited and the crow called Nishinoya was rolling around on his bald head.

“So who is he?”, I asked cautiously and regarded the feathers that mixed with the skin of his face and some on his arms.

Everyone in the room went silent and looked surprised.

“Uh you don’t-”, Sugawara was cut off by Hinata who yelled.

“I told him not to!”, as Hinata fell off my shoulder and to the ground the mix of orange and black feathers again hit my face.

“Kageyama you are even more scary-looking! I told you not to do that yet our magical bond still needs a bit!”, Hinata who was looking like a young boy now, scruffy orange looking hair and a delicate body, pointed at the scowling man.

“Kageyama?!”, my wide eyes darted towards the black haired man who pouted a bit.

“You didn’t realize it was me?”, he just muttered lowly.

Hinata who as well had some feathers grown together with his skin put his hands on his hair pulling it down, and scowled just like Kageyama.

“You didn’t realize it was me?”, he imitated and Kageyama grabbed him by his suspenders clearly agitated.

“Bogee! Do you think this is funny?!”

“Do you think this is funny?”, Hinata went on before Kageyama started shaking him.

My head was spinning again.

W-What was going on?!

Another man entered the room as he looked strictly at everyone.

“I told you to tune it down! Why do you always have to yell?!”, he closed the door behind him.

“Daichi it wasn’t us this time!”, Tanaka gave Hinata and Kageyama a challenging gaze.

Asahi flinched and I assumed he tried to hide… with a body he couldn’t hide.

The man called Daichi turned towards me and nodded.

“I am very sorry that those crows were making a ruckus”, I shook my head.

“N-No! It… actually”, I started to scratch my chin and stared at my crows who seemed fully human-like.

Daichi followed my gaze, an interested look on his face.

“Seems like Crows really do flock together, huh?”, his expression made me feel uneasy with what he could mean and I stared at Kageyama and Hinata, wondering what was going on.

I never saw a need for it to be honest, but since I started bonding with Hinata and Kageyama I constantly had the desire to know more behind this power, the power of magic creatures and handling magic in general.
