MBTI x BNHA Shuffle: The Diplomats

Another day another MBTI x BNHA Shuffle! As you may or may not know, the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator) is a very interesting tool that defines everyone’s personal traits with various letters that indicate how they interact with the world!

Makii and I have analysed two characters in more depth already: Oikawa Tooru and Kageyama Tobio, but this here is the last part of the MBTI BNHA Shuffle! To explain a bit more, I analyse the four different personalities that reside in the four categories, and apply BNHA character in that whole process! The first parts are already up and posted if you want to check those out: the Analysts, the Sentinels and the Explorers

What is MBTI?

For those of you who aren’t familiar, let me quote myself!

“[…]It’s basically a personality test that divides every person into a set of letters that combine a certain type of personality. There are 16 types in total, and they’re divided in four categories: the analysts, the diplomats, the sentinels and lastly the explorers.”

And this time, we’re going to dig deep into the diplomat’s category to see what kind of Boku no Hero Academia characters fit the descriptions and what that tells us about them! Mind you, this is my personal opinion and in no way absolute fact, if you have another take on this I would love to see your contribution in the comments below!

The Diplomats: compassionate and caring

All diplomats share the N (Intuition) and F (Feeling) which makes them extremely compassionate and creative as well as prone to being idealist.

Empathy is a key word when it comes to them, as they have the natural urge to help others in one way or another.

Their habit of being empathetic and sensitive to other people’s emotions also means that they strive for good in anything which makes them jump quickly when they feel someone has been hurt. The E (Extroversion) and I (Introversion) in the types balances their need to jump in and not every personality is an altruist, but diplomats tend to sense people’s mannerisms and emotions quite more easily.

Diplomates love big dreams and ideas. They fantasize about reality and what can’t be contained in it on the daily while putting their passions into something that might make them come true. The bigger the goal the more fascinating it becomes!

These personality types connect with others easily and love to delve in deep conversations with them. Small talk is fine, but engaging in conversation that diplomats are passionate about is their favorite thing to do.

A diplomate loves to express themselves in any kind of way. Be it art or any other kind they always find a way to put their own little spin on things.

The last thing diplomates want to be is lonely. They strive for deep human connection and hate the thought of never sharing anything with anyone ever again. They try to live their lives to the fullest and often believe in some kind of higher good. This is what drives them to be better and change the world around them.

While it’s easier for them to push others to their fullest potential, they might forget that they themselves have to actually push through to give themselves what they desperately crave.

So! Now that we’ve gone through a basic foundation of how diplomats work and think, let’s go meet some of them! The four personalities that reside in the diplomats category are INFJ, INFP, ENFJ and ENFP.

INFJ (Advocate)

INFJ’s are the rarest personality type there is! They make great advisers and strive to live their lives looking for the deeper meanings of things. Advocates tend to be quiet and reserved but they definitely leave their mark in society with their creative mindset.

Having the urge to connect to others, it’s especially easy for this personality type to understand other people and give them the help they need to flourish.

Although their strengths lie in helping others and seeing the deeper meaning in everything, their own personal struggles are locked within. Advocates don’t open up very easily and like to stay on the sidelines. Sometimes that might look like they’re uninterested or cold when they’re just trying to keep themselves out of the situation.

Perfectionism is nothing new to the diplomat category, and an Advocate often feels like they need to give their all to attain the goal they set for themselves. They stick to their principles and can get sensitive when criticised harshly.

The INFJs I would like to present are Pro Hero Thirteen and Izuku Midoriya.

As a Pro Hero, Thirteen plays a support and rescue role.

She is first introduced to us in the first season of the anime as a member of the U.A. staff. Like many INFJs, she takes on a supporting role and is very altruistic.

She is adamant on teaching others her ways of supporting each other and rescuing innocent people from danger and teaches her students to be very calm and collected in important situations.

Her passion goes to the point that she developed the “Unforeseen Simulation Joint” also commonly called U.S.J where the villains attack U.A for the first time.

Her intention is to make sure that the future heroes not only focus on attack strength and flashy quirks, but also learn how to act in high pressure situations in which lives are at stake.

This takes an ironic turn as her U.S.J facility is the place in which the students have to endure the first villain attack.

Thirteen is against mindless combat, but can’t let any harm come to her students so she fights ferociously even though she is not focused on combat.

This shows us the hidden passion and resolve that comes to shine whenever time calls for it.

When push comes to shove, Thirteen is ready to protect her students with her life and will do everything to get them to safety.

Izuku Midoriya is the protagonist of BNHA.

That is no new information, what is interesting though is the fact that someone who was quirkless and weak and generally wimpy looking became the focal point of the story.

Midoriya used to be watching from the metaphorical side of the road.

Born quirkless and in the society of BNHA as inferior, he had no chance to become a hero.

Or so we thought.

Toshinori saw something in Izuku that no one else saw, not even himself: pure heroism.

The fact that Izuku would just jump into action and meddle in situations where people needed help was what made Izuku the prime example of a hero.

But that is not the only reason he makes a great protagonist and hero in the making.

Izuku has keen observational skills and notes down every trivia he knows about his hero idols and his colleagues.

This enables him to strategize and use intricate plans to get to where he needs to be. Paired with his new quirk One for All he trains hard and supports everyone around him to become the number one hero.

Izuku is such an inspirational figure because it shows that as long you really want something and are willing to work hard for it you can definitely achieve it.

ENFP and ENTP are really compatible with this personality!

INFP (Mediator)

At first glance INFPs might seem very shy, but there’s a passion lying inside them that comes to the forefront when they feel comfortable. Their unpractical and fantastical thinking might make them look childish and they get misunderstood easily as frail and weak. Quite on the contrary mediators have set ideals and principles they like to pursue and they give their all to live their life the way they imagine it to be best.

INFPs think out of the box and may have unconventional methods to solve their problems. They can be impractical in their daily lives, sabotaging themselves due to self criticism and fear. Conflict is something Mediators like to avoid, they dodge uncomfortable situations or bury their complaints to a point where their emotions can overtake them.

Two of the INFPs residing in the BNHA universe are Tamaki Amajiki and La Brava.

Tamaki is first introduced in season three as a third year and looks very intimidated by his surroundings. His severe anxiety inhibits him and keeps him from being able to even look others in the eye.

Even when others compliment him, especially FatGum, he perceives those comments as mocking because he doesn’t believe in his own abilities like his friends do.

Mirio as his best friend and Nejire are his support system that makes sure he believes in his ability, because as the title big three forebodes, he is extremely intelligent and strong.

Without context, one would believe he is a whiny and weak character, but the first fact that we find out about him is that he is part of U.As big three.

He is in fact one of the most promising students of the whole faculty.

Yes he might be shy, but there’s a whole other character waiting behind the mask. Tamaki is ready to fight for his dreams and sees his friend Mirio as a huge inspiration.

While fighting he holds closely to his morals and values and surges forward despite the chance of losing.

While his anxiousness is what might inhibit him in his day to day life, when he fights he does it to protect his friends and to become a great hero, and therefore shows himself as a lot more valuable than he thinks he is.

La Brava is the sidekick to the villain Gentle Criminal and is an INFP as well.

Her love for Gentle is apparent, she learns and skills herself in abilities to support Gentle and be of use to him and she makes sure to never leave his side.

La Brava, like many other INFPs, has a set value system and is drawn to people who feel the same way. As she found Gentle and he found her, they started to work together to achieve mostly Gentle’s goals.

As his support character, La Brava enjoys watching Gentle succeed and works hard to be of use to him. She is very cheerful and blushes whenever she is complimented by him, and garners her happiness from his affection.

Until the very end and before getting captured by Deku, La Brava stays loyal and does everything she can to save her Gentle, while she keeps admiring his determination to continue his master plan.

Even as she is on the floor and injured, her last words are a proclamation of love, which also boosts her beloved for a last showdown.

To be loved and to love fiercely is what mattered to La Brava until the very end.

ENFJs and ENTJs are the most complatible to this personality type!

ENFJ (Protagonist)

In this household, we love and appreciate our ENFJs!

ENFJs are another extremely rare personality type that is often misunderstood and misrepresented. As the protagonist personality you would think these types like to shine in the limelight and boast around, but it is actually quite the opposite.

Protagonists have a natural occuring charisma and know their way with words and feelings. They can determine how other people emote and check their mannerisms really quick. Versatile and accommodating are good words to describe them, as they strive to improve not only themselves but also everyone around them. They shine most when they’re passionate and advising, giving other people they care about everything they need to succeed. This is why other people often push them into the role of the caregiver and leader, even though ENFJs don’t really want the attention on themselves.

You can rely on a protagonist to help you when you’ve got a puzzling problem in front of you, since they feel uneasy with leaving some open. They’re very tolerant and accepting of others and have a very high affinity of being altruistic. When you find an ENFJ by themselves they’re probably throwing their whole being into something they have to accomplish. They spread themselves very thin to keep to their own standards and no one is harsher on them than they are themselves.

The ENFJs in question are Mirio Togata and Toshinori Yagi!

Mirio Togata also known as the Hero Lemillion who was supposed to inherit One For All and become Toshinori’s next student.

Despite Izuku being chosen for OFA, Mirio has an exceptional Quirk and a lovable personality that shines brightly.

As a member of the big three he is a prime example of how a student should be and his power is unmatched compared to his peers. As a motto, he makes sure to always smile and is on his best behaviour to inspire the people around him.

Mirio doesn’t see himself as the best or the leader of others. His natural open personality and innate altruism is what makes others gravitate towards him.

As someone with a goal in mind he gives everything he has to commit and get to what he desires to do.

When he found out about the horrors Eri had to go through, he automatically started sticking to her and was so emotionally involved with her story that he started crying when she genuinely smiled for the first time.

Even as he loses his Quirk while fighting, he buries his feelings inside him and shows an optimistic smile towards the public. It’s only when he is alone and in front of people he trusts that he lets his emotions run free.

Toshinori Yagi is not only any kind of Pro Hero, he is the number one of japan.

What does this mean?

Being not only the number one because of skill or a mere ranking, but holding the whole responsibility of being the symbol of peace in your hands.

Toshinori has a strong sense of justice, which makes sense as an influential hero, but his ideals still are part of why he has become such an icon.

He is determined to save as many people as he can, but not just in any ordinary way. He has to do it with a smile.

This serves as inspiration for so many people and heroes who want to be like him in this sense.

While Toshinori is a great figure and shows people to be strong and keep the peace, the public doesn’t know of his struggles. In the end, being the number one hero means saving humanity from all impending doom, even if it means sacrificing oneself.

His injury makes it impossible for him to stay in his muscle form the entire time and his body is slowly decaying while only a few know of this. It shows that Toshinori will do anything  to save everyone else, but the expectation of him being the number one hero is so high that he could only retire after fighting to his brink.

The most compatible personality types of ENFJ are ISFP and INFP!

ENFP (Campaigner)

ENFPs are inherently curious and love to explore the big wide world. They love to take in everything surrounding them be it good or bad and have a feel of freedom and exploration about them. The atmosphere Campaigners bring is carefree and loving, and they’re often very popular among others.

Communicating is an easy piece for them. If it’s deep talk or small talk it doesn’t matter to them, they know how to voice themselves with ease and can move the discussion to their benefit in a seamless way. A carefree and independent life is the most founded principle in their life. Campaigners want to live their life like they want to, restrictions in any way makes them uneasy and could damage strain relationships faster than expected.

When it comes to practical skills and focusing on more “boring” tasks ENFPs have problems adjusting and would rather continue living their fun life. Although they seem happy and excited all the time they tend to overthink a lot and get stressed regularly.

Nejire Hado and Pro Hero Miss Joke are our ENFPs!

Nejire is also part of the big three of U.A, and her first appearance in the anime shows us a lot of her ENFP traits.

As a naturally curious young woman she is extremely excited by meeting the class 1A and already has all of their names memorized. She might be a bit over the top but is a great conversationalist and actually, as we later see in the sports festival arc, a very mystical and soothing presence.

As a hero she explores everything around her and loves to meet new people, she also has the habit of asking very personal questions from the get go to quench her thirst for information.

Not afraid to speak her mind, Nejire is ready to tell everyone around her what she thinks and what she wants them to know. This is sometimes perceived as pushy, but also very endearing for people with similar extroverted traits like her.

When in a fight and while lives are in danger, Nejire becomes eerily quiet and focused, which is a total switch from her normal attitude.

She truly believes in her peers’ abilities and is often the one to support Tamaki when he feels overwhelmed. Her presence is so encapsulating, that even Tamaki can raise his head and admire her f.e. at the sports festival.

Miss Joke is as her name suggests a very outgoing and funny person.

Always cracking jokes and making people around her laugh shows her ability to communicate with all kinds of people around her. Miss Joke is always sure to use her Quirk so others can laugh in the most serious situations, which is also shown as she uses her Quirk on Shota Aizawa.

Her uninhibited personality doesn’t let her shy aways from Shota’s  cold exterior, and she continues to obviously flirt with him to get a reaction.

Despite her funny persona, she focuses on her students and believes in every single one of them to have great dreams and ambitions. She doesn’t let others overshadow her class by rank and believes to let events play out before judgement should be made.

During the Provisional Hero Licence exam she shows a very nuanced and calm understanding of how the exam works and how the students are performing, and she is annoyed by Shota thinking his students are better only because they’re from U.A.

When it comes to her class she feels very connected to them and is very proud to have them.

INTJs and INFJs are the most compatible with ENFPs!

How do you guys feel about this assortment of personalities? Do you think they fit? Are there any types that should be different in your opinion? Let me see that brainstorm in the comments please!

The tea is green this time! Is that because of the diplomats?
